SAAF’s New Executive Director: Wendell Hicks

I began my career in HIV/AIDS health services as a volunteer in 1989, so for me, this is a homecoming of sorts.

I am grateful to be able to be part of a wonderful organization with a primary focus on people infected and affected by this epidemic, where my passion began and
continues.

The reputation of Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation is what drew me to accept this challenge. That reputation has obviously been built upon the efforts of a dedicated board, staff, and the incredible generosity of a nurturing and supportive community.

To be in the company of such people is indeed an exciting prospect where we can continue to strive to truly make a difference in so many lives.

- Wendell Hicks

The Board of the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation is happy to announce Wendell Hicks as our new Executive Director. He will be starting in October 2007.

About Wendell:

  • Since January 2000 until September 2007, he has served as Executive Director for Special Health Resources for Texas, a multi-million dollar; 90+ employee AIDS organization.
  • He has also worked at Wellspring Recovery Center in the roles of Program Manager, HIV Early Prevention Clinical Coordinator, and HIV Services Case Manager.
  • Previous to being at Wellspring, Wendell was a Substance Abuse Counselor at Sabine Valley Center.

Among his accomplishments are:

  • Elected to the first chairmanship of the State of Texas Assembly Group East which oversaw planning and distribution of Ryan White, state services and HOPWA funds.
  • Helped to create and implement a Texas state-wide program that provided chemical dependency treatment and medical care to clients in need.
  • Helped to create and implement the first “Promotora” project, a dental program for people living with HIV/AIDS at Texas A & M and Baylor Dental School.
