SAAF in the community...to educate
The 2006-2007 fiscal year has been exciting and productive for SAAF’s Speakers’ Bureau. The Speakers’ Bureau provides outreach to the southern Arizona community through community booths and public speaking presentations. Over the past year, SAAF’s volunteer speakers have represented the agency more than 90 times at community events, schools, churches, organizations, and businesses.
SAAF’s speakers typically give two types of presentations, called “HIV 101” and “Living with HIV/AIDS”. While HIV 101 presentations teach participants about what HIV/AIDS is and how it can be prevented, Living With presentations typically focus on the personal experiences of the speaker. The feedback SAAF receives from both of these presentations is overwhelmingly positive. After a recent speaker’s presentation a participant commented “I have a totally different outlook on HIV and AIDS.”
Groups reached by the SAAF’s Speaker’s Bureau this year include students from ten area high school and middle schools, various classes at both the University of Arizona and Pima Community College, six local churches, many of the area’s largest employers (including Raytheon and Intuit), and numerous nonprofit agencies.
