Prevention Volleyball and BBQ at Himmel Park
The newly funded Men's Sexual Health and Personal Empowerment (MSHAPE) program, formerly known as the Gay Men’s Health Project, had their first social event on Saturday, June 2, 2007. Seventeen men ranging in age from 18 to 55 gathered at Himmel Park for a fun afternoon of volleyball and barbequed hamburgers and hot dogs, chips, potato salad and non-alcoholic beverages.
Dave Martinez, the program’s manager and his staff were on hand to greet and talk with the participants as well as play many games of volleyball. This informal social event gave everyone an opportunity to meet new people, catch up with friends and expand their social networks.
The program’s focus is to provide successful HIV prevention interventions for men's needs and tie HIV risk-reduction to the satisfaction of other needs, such as developing friendships, having fun, and enhancing self-esteem.
