Past Prevention Programs

Note: The following Prevention Programs are no longer in existence. They are listed here for reference and historical purposes only.

Check Yourself Youth Team

Check Yourself Youth Team is charged with helping local Latino and African American youth make good, sound decisions about substance use, sex and their bodies by providing factual, unbiased and culturally sound information. Youth have been trained as Peer-Oriented Leaders (POLs) at two locations. These POLs are preparing to assist in training middle school aged youth at a third location in the upcoming year. One of our most notable accomplishments is our collaborative relationship with the Tucson Unified School District, the largest one in Southern Arizona. This relationship, along with our collaborations with the Tucson Urban League Academy and Luz Social Services, has allowed us the opportunity to measure what youth in our communities know and don’t know, do and don’t do in terms of sex and drugs. This work will help Check Yourself and similar programs can better match sound information with our youths’ skills and knowledge.

Gay Men's Health Project

Gay Men's Health Project used its own revised and updated version of the Popular Opinion Leader model to train local gay men to promote healthy behavior within their social networks. Attendance at GMHP’s first annual Men4Men Health Expo topped 350. GMHP also increased its distribution of safe sex kits in the local GLBT community to more than 30,000.

Omeyocan YES (Youth Empowerment & Sexuality)

Omeyocan YES (Youth Empowerment & Sexuality) train Latina/o youth as Credible Peer Leaders (CPL) who document more than 2,500 conversations with their families and peers on topics such as popular education, sexual health, cultural, youth organizing, and substance abuse prevention.

These comprehensive Latino based programs are aimed to better serve Latino clients and Salud participants living in the area. SAAF/Salud joined with Wingspan joined with to provide, Puertas Abiertas, a social support group for Latino LGBT people. Salud continued to provide HIV and Substance Abuse prevention/ education trainings utilizing two major science-based models to Latino MSM in Tucson and Nogales.

Proyecto Conexión

Proyecto Conexión provides culturally and linguistically appropriate substance abuse and HIV prevention services to Latino MSM and Latinos living with HIV. All project collaborators have participated in the Cultural Competency assessments along with two non-collaborators who also serve Latinos. The Proyecto Prevention Case Manager provides services to Latinos with HIV and Substance Abuse issues and their family members.

De Ambiente

De Ambiente is an HIV prevention program specifically targeted to Latino men who have sex with men (MSM), in Tucson, Arizona. De Ambiente is implementing the curriculum “Hombres de Ambiente” an adaptation of Many Men, Many Voices (3MV), a science-based prevention curriculum that is recognized by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as an effective HIV prevention intervention.

Pulse

Pulse is an innovative club drug harm reduction program for gay males and members of the MSM population who attend the club, circuit and after-hours scene. Pulse provides them with the opportunity to become community leaders in educating their peers about Ecstasy and other club drugs.

Our goal is to educate members of the Tucson gay male and MSM community on Ecstasy and other club drug prevention and harm reduction. By strengthening leadership skills, Pulse aims to initiate the development of new behavioral trends. Thus creating a healthier, well-informed and empower community.
