SAAF's Prevention Department believes that the needs of those at risk for HIV/AIDS is to be addressed from a holistic perspective - that in order for harm reduction to work, individuals/clients must feel a sense of self-worth and must have a positive connection to the community.
Oppression/bias in the areas of culture/ethnicity, sex/gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, national origin, economic status, and ability/disability creates a culture of marginalization and disenfranchisement that often decrease esteem and ones ability and desire to reduce risky behaviors and access healthcare information and services.
HIV is often one outcome from a series of risk behaviors committed by oppressed and marginalized individuals, thus the need for comprehensive education and prevention services.
