The HIV virus infects men, women, and children. It infects our family members, our friends, our neighbors and in some cases, ourselves. No matter who the virus infects, it is another human being, a member of our community. Your support will help provide care for people living with HIV/AIDS. It will also help in promoting that much-needed message of prevention, our only cure.

Planned Giving |
Planned gifts are ways to include your preferred charity in your estate planning objectives. This helps ensure high quality services by the charity through the years ahead. Reducing one’s tax liabilities is another benefit of a planned gift.
More specifically, a planned gift is distinct from an outright gift through the following ways:
- A planned gift is generally an asset other than cash.
- The gift can be delivered either immediately or at sometime in the future.
- Immediate or future tax benefits result from various types of planned gifts.
- The services of a professional and a legal instrument are often necessary for a planned gift.
Examples of Planned Gifts:
- The Bequest is the most popular type of planned gift. A bequest is made through one’s will. When it is made to a charity, it can reduce various estate tax liabilities. Approximately 90% of planned gifts are bequests.
- Retirement plan assets from IRAs, 401Ks, 403(b)s, and other retirement plans can list a charity as a beneficiary. The inclusion of a nonprofit assists the donor in avoiding substantial income taxes that may have resulted if the beneficiary was a non-spousal heir. The beneficiary designation should occur on the plan’s form and not through the will, which may jeopardize the tax benefits.
- Life Insurance gifts are planned gifts. There are two ways one can use a life insurance policy as a planned gift. One is for the donor to name the charity as the beneficiary of the life insurance policy. No federal estate tax will be held on life insurance proceeds when the gift matures. The other is for the donor to irrevocably sign the policy to the charitable organization and each year contribute the annual premium amount to the charity. The income tax deduction is received for the lesser of the policy’s value or for the net premiums paid; subsequent contributions to cover the premium are also tax-deductible.
Numerous other planned giving options exist for a donor. Among these options are gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and charitable lead trusts.
Contact your investment adviser or estate planner for fuller explanations of these options. Questions may also be referred to Rick Wilson CFRE, SAAF’s Director of Development at 520-628-7223 or by
.
Planned gifts help ensure the services needed by a nonprofit organization will be there tomorrow to continue to address the needs of the community. It is a way to leave a legacy.
